Work Out your Brain and Body!
Aphasia is a disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate and comprehend and is usually caused by damage to one or more of the language areas of the brain – often as a result of stroke. Aphasia DOES NOT affect intelligence.
Language recovery can be a long process. Speech-language therapy is often helpful in the recovery process.
Preliminary research done with stroke survivors who attend a fitness class that combines physical tasks with cognitive and language tasks in individuals with aphasia (speech difficulty) and cognitive (thinking) challenges shows that class participants perform "walking and talking" tasks better than non–exercisers.
Incorporating aphasia treatment activities into an exercise routine may help make new neural connections in the brain. The Work Out Your Words program is designed to synchronize movement and speech and cognitive activities.
